SEE EMILY PLAY Emily McBurney looks back at a memorable year

2016 has been a very exciting time for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed

my year as Cheshire Girls Junior Captain, which enabled me to play at many courses across the county and to work more closely with my team members and county organisers - their work for the county is invaluable. Being involved with county golf has

allowed me to take on the responsibilities of

an England Golf Junior Girls

Ambassador, a role which I have found very rewarding. It was exciting to see so many Junior Girls at the organised events and to encourage them to take up golf through fun coaching sessions and 9 hole competitions. My personal highlights of the year include finishing 15th in the English Girls U18 Championship at The Nottinghamshire Golf Club in July, and being selected to represent Cheshire Ladies First Team at Northern County Match Week played at Penrith Golf Club in Cumbria. I hope to further improve my golf next

year and continue to play an active role in encouraging more girls to take up the

The W.I.T.C. brings ladies’ Clubs on both sides of the Atlantic together for a festival of friendly sporting rivalry. It grew from an original eight Clubs and this year added Royal Portrush and Aberdeen Ladies’ Golf Clubs. On a sunny September day,

Emma took a life-changing leap from amateur to professional golf two years ago and hasn’t looked back. These

LOUISE FLEET “UNIQUE AND REWARDING” IS HOW RLGC MEMBER LOUISE DESCRIBES HER THIRTEEN YEARS WORKING AT THE TOP LEVEL OF GOLF ADMINISTRATION.

The story begins back in 2001 when Louise was asked to join the Welsh Ladies Golf Union committee. Soon afterwards Wales was chosen to host the 2010 Ryder Cup and Louise became a director of the Ryder Cup Wales (2010), the body tasked with ensuring the event provided a lasting legacy for the Welsh nation. She also chaired its Audit Committee and says, “Being part of the world’s third largest sporting spectacle was an amazing experience.” In 2007 Louise became the

first Chairman of the newly formed 46 ROYAL LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB MAGAZINE 2 017

Golf Union of Wales which merged the men’s and ladies’ unions. Subsequently she became President and served a total of six years. Louise says she never imagined how being involved in these two significant golfing events could be surpassed but in November 2015 she was invited to become a member of The R&A. Now she is one of just fifteen full members of the Club who are women. She adds: “Golf has been generous

to me. I have met lovely people, played on fantastic golf courses and have many wonderful memories to recall - I am a very lucky person!”

are some memories of her second year on tour. I started the year with a trip I’ll never forget - to South Africa to play on the Ladies Sunshine tour. I

entered two events near

Johannesburg: The Supersport Ladies Challenge and Sun International Ladies Open. The playing conditions and the courses were very different to the UK but I had two great finishes including a top 5 in the final event.

BATTLE OF THE MILLENNIUM

The Ladies Millennium Links Cup is an annual competition that, as its name might suggest, was first competed for in 2000 to celebrate the millennium. Eight Merseyside links courses from

both sides of the river take part, and each team consists of seven players with a range of handicaps. After beating Birkdale and Wallasey in our initial matches Royal Liverpool progressed to the semifinals and finals day at Formby Ladies in October. Despite a very early breakfast and after

lot of nip and tuck out on the course we managed to beat Southport and Ainsdale 4-3.

In the afternoon’s final we took on Hillside and the result was an even more nail biting match. The winning margin
