Welsh adaptation of Macbeth broadcast live Te Herald reviews: Monster Trucks
ADDING to the never-ending list
of movies that have been rebooted, remade and recycled in recent years, Hollywood have just dished out ‘Monster Trucks’. We all know that Hollywood will
do anything to drive audiences to the cinema and of course, what drives that is a key film concept. Lately, there have been a lot of
successes in the cinema such as the recent ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ for Star Wars fans and ‘Trolls’. Seeing how popular previous hits
‘Macbeth’: Catch it at the Torch HINTERLAND actor Richard
Lynch will perform in a Welsh- language adaptation of ‘Macbeth’, being broadcast to the Torch Theatre in Milford Haven on Valentine’s Day (Feb 14). Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru,
in partnership with Cadw and with support from Chapter, will broadcast the Welsh-language drama live to the Torch from Caerphilly Castle. Shakespeare’s brutal tragedy will
be broadcast live to cinemas across Wales, as part of Theatr Genedlaethol’s new pilot venture, Theatr Gen Byw. Richard Lynch (Pobol y Cwm,
Hinterland) will play the part of Macbeth, and Ffion Dafis (Byw Celwydd, Rownd a Rownd) will play the part of Lady Macbeth. These two highly respected Welsh actors will lead a cast of professional actors in addition to a local community cast, to bring Shakespeare’s classic to life. Following a similar cooperation
earlier this year with the community of the Bethesda and Bangor area in the making of ‘Chwalfa’, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru has invited members of the local community of Caerphilly to take part. Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru is
very proud to present this translation of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, one of the last works of the late Professor Gwyn Thomas. Gwyn Thomas, who died earlier this year, was a former Head of
the Welsh Department at Bangor University and National Poet of Wales 2006-2008. He was a prolific author, and amongst his invaluable contributions to Welsh cultural life are his many volumes of poetry, plays and academic writings, and an English translation of the Mabinogi. Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director
of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and the Director of Macbeth, said: “This is the third time in our history that we are presenting Shakespeare in Welsh, following the production of Romeo and Juliet in 2004 and Y Storm in 2012. It was a pleasure to work with Gwyn, and it is very sad that he will not see the fruits of his labour realised on stage and his masterful, poetic translation performed. We present this production in his memory. “Macbeth was the first Shakespeare
play I came across, aged 12, and I was immediately captivated by its magic and darkness. This is the first time for me to direct a Shakespearean play, and I look forward to it with both excitement and apprehension.” Tickets are £10, or £9 for
concessions. To book online visit

‘Transformers’ and ‘The Lego Movie’ were for audiences everywhere, nothing stopped director Chris Wedge (behind ‘Ice Age’ in 2002 and ‘Robots’ in 2005) pitch yet another toy-related film synopsis to Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies. Fast forward to the end of 2016 and
‘Monster Trucks’ landed in cinemas with a fun and memorable adventure for the youngsters and their families. ‘Monster Trucks’ introduces us to Tripp (Lucas Till), a high school senior
who does not love the life he leads in a small town, while his parents’ marriage is breaking down. Wanting to get away, Tripp has an
idea and decides to build a monster truck from pieces of scrap cars that he finds.
But an accident occurs at a nearby
oil-drilling site which, as a result, introduces a strange and subterranean creature. The creature, now part of Tripp’s truck, has a talent for taste and speed, which means that Tripp could have found the key to leaving his hometown and a chance to make an unusual friend. The American action comedy
really provides a lot of laughs for the audience and will have the young members of the audience glued to the screens from beginning to end. For adults, this is a very difficult
one to analyse. That being said, although ‘Monster Trucks’ follows the same conventions as many other films, it succeeds in telling the story in very humorous ways.
Writers Jonathan Aibel, Glenn
Berger, Derek Connolly and Matthew Robinson do a really good job of providing a lot of comical one-liners and modern references, such as selfies and Tripp lazily nicknaming the monster ‘Creech’. The action scenes are not to be
taken seriously but are instead seen as light-hearted, which fit the bill with such a young target audience. ‘Monster Trucks’ also feature a
talented cast, including Lucas Till (Tripp), Jane Levy (Meredith), Barry Pepper (Sherriff Rick), Rob Lowe (Reece Tenneson), Amy Ryan (Cindy), Danny Glover (Mr Weathers) and Holt McCallany (Burke), who all give credible and convincing performances throughout the entire production. So, if you know of any youngsters
who are eager to see a harmless creature come to life or are interested in the ‘Monster Trucks’ brand, then don’t miss out on your chance to tag along to an exciting adventure!
