Broadstone Middle School, Age 9-13 At Broadstone Middle School we strive
followed their
for the children to be engaged and excited about all aspects of education.
In Key Stage 2 we focus on an enriching cross-curricula approach, where a range of topics are selected to cover different subject areas. This could be anything from history to science or art. At the beginning
of each new topic, we provide ‘Hook Days’ for the children to fully immerse themselves and become engrossed with their new learning. As an example of these, Year 5 have had the company ‘Sirteachalot’ in school for a Roman and a Greek day.
Year 6 are currently focusing
on ‘Healthy
Lifestyles’ and have been involved in making healthy snack bars. After a taste testing session, pupils planned their ingredients to make either a non-bake bar or fl apjack. During the making session, everyone
method carefully, which resulted in some very tasty snacks. Staff
were particularly impressed with their listening and
clearing up skills afterwards!
However, these Hook Days are not only inside the school grounds, the year groups venture out to explore local attractions that link to their new topic. So far this year the children have been to Monkey World, Bournemouth Aviation Museum and Adventure Wonderland, to name but a few.
The ideology behind the ‘Hook Day’ is to use physical experiences to apply to their upcoming learning, creating a culture of meaningful knowledge.
Key Stage 3 focus on a subject lead approach to education, but we still thrive to motivate the children through various planned activities and adventures, most recently exploring the local coastline to support their geography.
