Broadstone Community Speed Watch
Speed is a major factor in about a third of all traffi c collisions. Each year, in excess of 700 people die and more than 4,500 are injured nationally as a result of speeding.
What is Community Speed Watch?
Community Speed Watch (CSW) is a partnership initiative that is aimed at raising awareness and encouraging speed reduction. Reducing speed will directly contribute to help saving lives and will improve the quality of life for all people in Dorset. It is an opportunity for you to get involved in making the roads safer where you live.
Vehicles exceeding the speed limit are referred to the Police with the aim of educating drivers to reduce their speeds.
CSW is manned by volunteers from your local community. All volunteers are subject to background checks by Dorset Police and, if successful, they receive appropriate training and guidance from Dorset police to enable them to mount CSW operations.
CSW operations may only be mounted on roads ‘approved’ and risk assessed by Dorset Police. Such roads will have posted speed limits of 20mph, 30mph or 40mph.
CSW volunteers are trained to operate speed measurement equipment recommended by Dorset Police. CSW volunteers do not have powers of enforcement, this responsibility remains with Dorset Police.
What is involved in setting up a CSW operation?
The fi rst task is to look at the long range weather forecast, this is in order to determine whether or not this may affect the planned Speed Watch operation.

• Identify volunteers available to mount the CSW operation (not less than three)
• Seek approval from Dorset Police and obtain an Incident number
• Mount CSW operation – usually 1 hour duration
• On certain occasions uniformed Police Offi cers may attend to support the CSW team
• Monitor all vehicles (and motorcycles) and identify those travelling at excessive speed and gather data and information
• On completion of operation, collate data and send to Dorset Police CSW Unit.
Can anyone join?
Short answer – YES, but volunteers must be at least 18 years of age or older, and acceptance will be subject to satisfying the Dorset Police background checks, and attending the Awareness and Safety training provided by a Dorset Police liaison offi cer.

We plan our fi rst CSW event on Saturday 29th April, in front of Bugden’s Supermarket. All enquiries will be warmly welcomed. This event is supported by Dorset Police CSW unit, your local Neighbourhood Policing Team and the ‘No Excuses’ team.
