YEARS REWARDING EXCELLENCE

COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICE INITIATIVE

Judith Morrison

Andersons Pharmacy, Portadown Judith - an independent prescribing pharmacist - set up a weekly cardiovascular clinic in partnership with the local gP practice. Using both gP records and the pharmacy's own database of patients with hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, Judith was able to establish a clinic to manage the relevant patients within that particular gP practice. through the clinic, Judith sought to manage hypertension patients to achieve optimal BP control through both lifestyle and medication. to date, the screening and interventions at the cardiovascular clinic has resulted in the detection of numerous conditions being diagnosed.

Joseph McAleer

Belcoo Pharmacy, Belcoo located in a small rural village, Belcoo Pharmacy is an essential link in the chain of medical services within the region. When a staff member’s father was diagnosed with dementia, Joseph decided to organise training by the Alzheimer’s Society for every member of staff. the pharmacy subsequently became a dementia friendly Pharmacy - the first in the area – and now supports and empowers patients with dementia to maintain their independence for as long as possible. Joseph and his staff recently won the Northern Ireland dementia friendly organisation of the Year Award (Private and public sector – small & medium).

Killian Johnston

H Sweeny Chemist, Derry/Londonderry Killian was keen to involve the pharmacy in more community-based work and so invested heavily in new premises and technology to free up both his and his staff’s time. he also brought in a new manager to allow him to concentrate solely on the patients. As a result, pharmacy footfall has dramatically increased, as has the number of patients now attending the pharmacy for additional services, such as minor ailments and smoking cessation. the new initiative has also increased the pharmacy ties with the local community group - the Bogside and Brandywell health forum.
