Let the celebrations begin
PREPARATIONS are under way for events of all shapes and sizes to celebrate the city’s 50th anniversary in 2017. The MK50 Project Board is co-ordinating a
programme of headline events, tours and trails, arts and heritage activity and community events. Confirmed so far are:
January 7-22 A major exhibition in Middleton Hall tells the story of how Milton Keynes turned from farm land and villages into a bustling city of nearly 270,000 people.
January 20-23 Over the ‘Birthday Weekend’, arts, heritage and sporting venues open their doors and hold celebratory events.
January 23The anniversary date of the charter being granted for Milton Keynes. Schools hold MK50 themed assemblies and a set of educational resources is being created for use throughout the year. There will be a formal birthday event, which also kicks off a year-long sporting programme.
May 1The Milton Keynes Marathon takes runners around key Milton Keynes landmarks. Competitors will receive a special medal featuring the MK50 logo.
June 17-18 Heritage re-enactments come to Campbell Park as part of a History Festival.
June 23-24The city will Party Like It’s 1967. Residents are invited to plan their own parties
and an events toolkit is being prepared. June 17-July 1 Milton Keynes hosts the International New Town Conference. July 15-16Willen Hospice’s fund-raising Midnight Moo walk will be a special golden themed event. In October two large-scale productions are
planned for the city centre: n The Stables Theatre and national live arts company Walk The Plank are producing an outdoor spectacle inspired by the concept of
Future Cities. n A collective of Milton Keynes artists are creating Home Sweet Home, a project where communities can get involved to create a performance and light piece. MK Gallery leads City Club, a programme of
new art, performances, family activities, events and talks inspired by the original cultural plans for Milton Keynes, delivered in partnership with the city’s arts and heritage organisations. Milton Keynes City Orchestra brings the best international soloists to Milton Keynes as its contribution to the year-long celebration Residents and visitors will have the
opportunity to explore the best of Milton Keynes
throughout 2017: n 50 Walks for MK50, in partnership with The Parks Trust exploring urban and rural routes. n 50 Free Things To Do in MK, which builds on
the successful Free Things initiatives run by the
National Trust and Arts Council England. n Sporting and active challenges, including opportunities to try new things and a 50 Week
Active Challenge. n A writer in residence has created ten short stories about public art in Central Milton Keynes. An audio trail app is due to launch for smartphones at the start of the year. Cllr Liz Gifford, cabinet member for
community facilities, said: “Milton Keynes Council is co-ordinating what is looking like a fantastic year. We are seeing organisations and businesses across the city developing exciting events and activities to celebrate this major milestone for Milton Keynes.
