This year’s Dragon Boat Festival will again be raising money for Age UK Milton Keynes. Its community engagement officer Paul Griffiths explains how it puts the money to good use.

Your support makes a massive difference

Age UK Milton Keynes is a local independent charity providing support to thousands of older people and their families in Milton Keynes. Our Information & Advice Service

runs free, confidential sessions at eight locations in Milton Keynes and our team of community home visitors made over 4,000 home visits last year. Our staff and volunteers helped their clients successfully claim an estimated £3.5 million in benefits in the last financial year - money that may have gone unclaimed without our involvement. Our workforce is experienced and compassionate, identifying and resolving problems that cause real anguish. Our services are varied. Fitting a grab rail or constructing an external handrail can be all it takes to enable an older person to live independently in their own home.

Last year our handypersons carried out over 1,000 small electrical, plumbing and carpentry jobs. Poor health can prevent an older person getting out and doing tasks that most of us take for granted:. The majority of our Home Support Service clients rely on us for regular housework or shopping service, which is charged by the hour. But we go the extra mile and consider any request that maintains an older person’s independence and helps them to feel less isolated and enjoy a better quality of life. Thanks to our partnership with the NHS Milton Keynes Clinical Commissioning group, our Hospital Aftercare Service provides practical and emotional support that helps people avoid unnecessary delays in being discharged from hospital and also prevents readmission. We fit key safes for carers to use, collect shopping and clean homes for a

welcoming return. We also stay for a chat. Last year the Hospital Aftercare Service took more than 600 people home and supported over 300 people in the weeks after they left hospital. Like all charities, we constantly need to raise money and are particularly grateful for the support of businesses in Milton Keynes. We also need your help as the reduction in funding for social services is sending more and more people in our direction.
