Marina Alta Fine Arts Society forthcoming illustrated lectures Thursday 19th January - Highlights of Spanish Painting.


Presented by Harry Fletcher. Artist and art tutor including Open University. This lecture explores why Las Meninas, by Diego Velazquez, was voted “the world’s greatest painting”, and why it influenced Manet and Picasso; it explores major works by El Greco, Murillo and Goya, Picasso and Dali. Illustrated by the lecturer’s own excellent set of some of the finest images in the art world. Venue: Parador de Jávea. Doors open: 9.30am. Meeting begins: 10.30am. Thursday 2nd February - La Vie de Bohème: artistic life in the Belle Epoque Paris


Presented by Anne Anderson. Art Historian. Turn-of-the-century Paris beckoned artists from across Europe and beyond. Aspiring artists clubbed together in the cafes and cabarets of Montmartre - Apollinaire, Utrillo, Renoir, van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and later Picasso and Modigliani. This is the era of the Can-Can, cabarets and famous dancers and nightclubs.

The lectures are free to members but have an entrance fee for non members.


The Marina Alta Fine Arts Society (MAFAS) has been established on the Marina Alta with the objective of providing, and stimulating, awareness and enjoyment of the Arts. Also, to enhance knowledge of a broad span of related culture and heritage. The Society is part of the the UK’s internationally respected National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Society (NADFAS).
