RSM welcomes new cyber investment

Energy broker targets the retail water sector

With 17 years’ experience in the industry, energy broker Torse provides clients with support for their energy billing, payments and contract obligations, with more than 100,000 business energy contracts placed since 1994. Now, specialising in helping clients obtain the best

gas and electricity prices based on energy consumption and projected usage, it is turning its attention to the water sector. The Nottingham-based company has outlined the procedure prospective customers for water services should take: • Customers should provide information about their water sites, including their most recent bill, to enable an energy broker to present a range of options to choose from, simplifying the process and helping find the right package at the best price.

• Once customers have provided site information, an energy broker can organise their portfolio and go to market to look for the best available prices. If the client chooses to accept one of these offers, the energy broker can offer water management services for their portfolio and deal with any issues that may arise.

• The energy broker can then notify customers when the contract with their existing supplier is approaching its end date and can help customers prepare for the next round of procurement, as well as handling the change of tenancy process if customers obtain a new property, or leave a property mid contract.

De-regulation of water will give eligible businesses, charities and the public sector the opportunity to switch water service provider in a similar way to gas and electricity – providing energy brokers such as Torse with an opportunity to shop around for the best available business contract, as they currently do with gas and electricity. Torse is making a head start by establishing

relationships with water companies to provide both stability and reassurance for current and new energy customers when choosing their water suppliers. It is following the market closely and conducting

analysis in order to provide the most relevant information to customers.

Commenting on the Government’s new National Cyber Security Strategy, Sheila Pancholi, Technology Risk Assurance Partner at RSM in the Midlands, said: ‘‘The new commitment to invest £1.9bn in developing the UK’s cyber defences will be welcome news to businesses across the Midlands. ‘‘While this investment is a step

in the right direction, it represents less than one per cent of the current projected global cost of cybercrime so this figure may well have to rise in the future. ‘The announcement that the

National Crime Agency will recruit over 50 specialist cyber-crime investigators to investigate the most serious incidents of cyber- crime is also long overdue, but will this really be enough to develop the world-class capability the Government is looking for? ‘‘As the Government identifies,

online threats can come from teens to foreign states carrying out sophisticated attacks. Regardless of their origin, the fact that the Government has made such a bold statement should encourage firms across the region to check their own precautions including their own incident response procedures.”
