The Shanghai skyline
In the evening we conquered the Shanghai traffic to all go for an end of
mission reception at the British Consul General's residence, a rather swanky penthouse flat with great terrace views over the city.
DAY 6 - SHANGHAI FINAL HURRAH Just one proper meeting today but it was an unexpected one in conjunction with the Nottingham City contingent. We had been trying to meet with senior people in the Shanghai
Commerce department for some time but with little success. However, our work over this past week somehow came to their attention
and they requested a meeting with us. We had a good meeting with Madam Zheng and her team and it was
clear they were well briefed and had done homework on Nottingham. Ian Curryer concluded the meeting by proposing that we enter into a
trade related MOU with them and they readily agreed. I think that they were pleased that we were talking about trade rather
than the usual inward investment agenda. The afternoon was the first bit of free time all week, so I went to have a
look at People's Park and Square and then to a bit of a touristy 'authentic' shopping area. An evening walk to the Bund and case packed for an early departure home in the morning, and that rounded off China 2016 for me.
REFLECTIONS - WAS IT WORTH THE INVESTMENT? What constitutes success is, of course, different for everyone, but everybody I spoke to was overwhelmingly positive about the experience. Thanks to a travel grant from DIT, the financial cost to the Chamber has
been relatively modest so the key cost has been my time. We aren't, of course, going to seal any new contracts or secure funding
for major schemes but we still need to get something out of the investment. From the outset I had four objectives:
1. Support the East Midlands local authorities with what they were trying to do. I certainly felt this was achieved - it was important and appreciated by the two city councils in particular that they included a trade offering in their delegation.
2. Enhance relationships with Chinese Commerce and Trade bodies that were created last year and create new relationships. Mission achieved - re-established contact with Ningbo, signed new MOU with Hefei and agreed to enter into an MOU with Shanghai.
3. Be seen to be there With 50 influential participants it is important that the Chamber is involved in major initiatives such as this.
4. Provide export support and advice to businesses I had several informal conversations with businesses about their specific export requirements.
Overall, I truly believe it has been a worthwhile exercise and a good use of my time. I would certainly encourage businesses to consider trade missions as a way of building export capabilities.
