Employers shape skills growth across Derby
Business Starter scheme launched
A scheme has been launched to encourage entrepreneurship in Derby and Derbyshire. The Chamber is working with the
city and county councils to deliver the D2 Business Starter Project. The aim of the programme, which
started on 1 November, is to encourage an increase in entrepreneurial activity and help entrepreneurs develop sustainable businesses. D2 Business Starter Project will
be delivered through workshops and one-to-one advice. It is hoped the programme will result in the creation of 120 new businesses before it ends in October 2019. To engage with would-be
entrepreneurs, the Chamber will host a series of informal events in the city and across the county at which they can meet project staff and learn more about how the programme will help them. The engagement events will be
followed by a series of workshops beginning in January next year.

An employer-led board is aiming to ensure local employers have a leading voice to improve employment and skills opportunities for local young people in Derby and Derbyshire. The D2 Skills & Employment Board (D2 SEB)
bridges the gap between the private sector and those delivering the local skills agenda. Initiated by D2N2 LEP and supported by both Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council, D2 SEB is an important resource to ensure there is appropriate employer ownership and leadership to steer opportunities for local young people. The D2 SEB also works with local partnerships to ensure employment and skills activity contributes to the local economic growth ambitions.

Midlands Airport), Holiday Inn Derby, Fairgrove Homes and Brighter Directions. Graham said: “It is important that the business
community has a voice in shaping the skills agenda, and although the D2 SEB has taken time to form and mature, it is now in a great position to move forward. Our annual report reflects this and business leaders should now be confident to join in and have a voice.” An annual report has been published for 2015/16
which provides a detailed account of all the key activities achieved in the past year and what the key priorities are for the next year. The future direction of D2 SEB is to focus on four
priority sectors including engineering, construction, health and social care and visitor economy, with an equal focus on work readiness. The objectives have been approved by Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council. Leader of Derbyshire County Council and Cabinet Member for Strategic Policy, Economic Development and Budget, Councillor Anne Western, said: “Our young people are the ones who will shape the future
so it’s important we give them the best opportunities. And by working closely with our partners in the Derbyshire Economic Partnership we’ll be able to share ideas about how best to support young people, businesses and local communities.”

Telecoms Professionals is for young people already working in junior IT roles at local businesses who require formal training and for school leavers looking to earn while they learn. Training is delivered both in the workplace and at the East Midlands’ first

deliver the Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principals, is being rolled out by West Nottinghamshire College to team members at Pendragon. Ten individuals, who
work at a range of car dealerships around the country, have embarked on the specially-devised training scheme being dubbed the ‘Pendragon Passport’, which is being delivered at the College’s state-of-the-art Engineering Innovation Centre in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. The programme, which runs until
2018, is a bespoke programme designed to upskill technicians in
the automotive industry and will equip technicians with skills such as car chassis technology, engine and transmission technology, electrical and electronic technology and a range of health and safety training as well as learning about the legal aspects of the industry. They will study over
a two-year period consisting of six
weekly blocks per year at the College’s
engineering facility. The College’s Head of
Business Development, James Godsell, said: “We’ve worked closely with Pendragon to create a robust and transferrable set of technical skills for this first cohort of students. We’re looking forward to building on this apprenticeship and welcoming further groups from the Pendragon group.”
