In keeping with national trends the number of households increased faster than the number of people in households. The total number of households is projected to change from 38,270 in 2015 to 42,498 in 2037, an increase of 11 per cent.

Although East Renfrewshire still has the highest average household size, this reduction in population has led to a decrease in average household size from 2.54 to 2.4210
. This
is partly as a result of the ageing population and also because more people are living alone.

Joint second highest in Scotland for percentage who are married or same sex couples with the second lowest proportion of divorcees¹¹.
One of the most ethnically and culturally diverse areas in Scotland with significant Muslim and Jewish communities 12

Significantly increasing pattern of more people entering East Renfrewshire than leaving (2,056 more over the past 3 years) and people aged 30-44 account for the largest proportion of entrants, mostly coming from Glasgow. Around 42 per cent of all house sales in East Renfrewshire in 2014 were people moving within East Renfrewshire.

Increasing demand for private sector rental market in Eastwood area and the number of private sector rentals has significantly increased over past 10 years. Meanwhile highest proportion of people who own their house by mortgage with house prices in the Eastwood area remaining amongst the most expensive in Scotland 14
.
These trends will have many implications including: •
The overall number of children is increasing across several areas, in particular in Newton Mearns and Busby/Clarkston, there is a higher concentration of children needing education with implications for nursery and school provision.

Changing housing needs: the housing needs of a 40 year old single person household are very different from the single occupant housing needs of an 85 year old. Meanwhile rising number of private sector rental properties which creates more demand for school places.

Increasing demand on care services due to a rise the proportion of older people and the onset of health related issues arising from an ageing population.
Rise in commuters working outwith East Renfrewshire with increasing demands on public transport such as trains and the road network.
