Over the past century, the age profile of the Scottish population has become much older, with the proportion aged under 15 falling from 32 per cent in 1911 to 16 per cent in 2011, while the proportion aged 65 and over has increased from 5 per cent to 17 per cent.
The past decade resulted in a 42 per cent change (654 people) in the actual number of people aged 85 and over.
Over the past 10 years, there was a 23 per cent change in the number of people aged between 75 and 84.
From 2001 to 2011, there was a 7.9 per cent change in the number of people aged 65-74.
In 2015, 19.4 per cent of people living in East Renfrewshire were aged 65 or over. Between 2001 and 2011, East Renfrewshire had the second highest increase in the over 80s in Scotland. By 2025, almost one quarter of the East Renfrewshire population will be aged 65 or over.
