Nationally the overall population is ageing and the numbers of people aged 16 and under are reducing. In East Renfrewshire, although the children and young people population between the Census estimates (2001 and 2011) decreased, there are real signs that it is changing with a significant rise in population of the under 5's and 5-9 year olds. From 2011 to 2015, the number of children aged under 5 increased by 7.7 per cent and the number of 5 to 9 years olds increased by 8.5 per cent. The number of young people aged 10 to 14 decreased by 2 per cent during this period. However the proportion of 10 to 14 year olds as a percentage of the total East Renfrewshire population still remains the highest percentage across Scotland. The increase in children aged under 5 year old is spread out across most communities as the graphs highlight. Clarkston and Williamwood has the highest proportion of children aged under 5 at 6.7 per cent of the overall population but other areas like Newton Mearns and Stamperland/Netherlee follow closely behind.
