In the Census of 2011, of the 37,225 households in East Renfrewshire, married or same-sex couple families (either with or without children) were the most common household type at 34 per cent. This was followed by households with one person aged under 65 living alone (16 per cent) or with one person aged 65 or over living alone (15 per cent). Lone parent families accounted for 10 per cent of all households with nearly two thirds including dependent children. Five per cent were cohabiting couple families and 10 per cent were families aged 65 and over. The remaining 3 per cent were “Other” household types.


East Renfrewshire Council has a higher than the Scottish average percentage of households with married / civil partners with dependent children (21.1 per cent).


The percentage of households with one person aged under 65 living alone is smaller (6 per cent difference) in East Renfrewshire than in Scotland as an average. However there is a slightly higher proportion of one person households aged 65 and over and families aged 65 and over (both are 2 per cent higher than the national average).
