GOOD EATS

Southern Kitchen 576 South Congress Street New Market, Virginia 22844 (540) 740-3514 While visiting the greater Washington,

DC and surrounding area a couple of weeks ago, my buddy Craig Stevens and I took a lunch break at the quaint diner, Southern Kitchen. Sitting smack dab in the middle of the Civil War-Surviving town of New Market, the restaurant holds as much character as the old homes and shops that surround it. Founded by the Newland family in 1955, Southern Kitchen has been serving good food to townspeople and tourists alike for over 60 years.

The menu is large and varied, including

traditional favorites like burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, BLT’s, a triple decker club sandwich and so many more. Now, I did overhear a patron talking

about “Lloyd’s Famous Fried Chicken.” Ap- parently, it is the best chicken the gentleman speaking has ever consumed. Many combina- tions of chicken plates are available, including a breast and wing with baked potato and salad ($10.95), or how about fried chicken liv- ers? Again with both sides ($10.95) Southern Kitchen also offers their chicken ala carte by the bucket, as well as all of their sides. Pretty much anything you are hanker-

ing for can be found at Southern Kitchen, from thick steaks, to appetizers, wraps, beer & wine, soups, salads, wings, and an array of deserts. There is an extensive breakfast menu, along with lunch specials and daily dinner specials. As for me, I had set my goal (for the

second time in a weekend) on oysters, and while there were no steamed oysters on the menu, I bit bthe buklet and ordered their

fried oyster plate with side salad and baked potato. ($11.95) Full disclosure. I had ordered the same

thing the day before at another area restau- rant, and the oysters were okay, I suppose. Nothing to write home about. The Southern Kitchen oysters, however, may be the best tasting fried oysters I have ever had. Now I have a favorite place for fried, and a favorite place for raw/steamed! (Whitey’s Fish Camp, Jacksonville, Florida.) I would highly recommend a visit to

Southern Kitchen if you are in the area. The decor is very 1950’s/’60s and you gat that nostalgic feel, which only adds to the joy of “home cookin.’”
