and some of my Houston friends are on there, Steve Cray plays harmonica on it and my buddy Eric Dimmer plays a couple songs on sax. He played with Gatemouth Brown for years and we added a keyboard player there in Columbus you know, just because it makes it sound so good, but I don’t have one in the band ‘cuz then I’d have eight people which we can barely fit on stages now with seven. (Laughs) We recorded it pretty much around Columbus there and I had it mixed in Nashville. A friend of mine who was actually in Columbus had a studio there and he moved to Nashville right in the middle of my record- ing which caused me to have to go to a differ- ent studio to finish this stuff but he got a chance to move down there and get a music studio going. It’s Fishtank Audio. So we ended up doing that and so far we’re getting really, really good reviews. Everybody seems to like it and I couldn’t be happier. The only thing I wish, I wish I could’ve gotten it out a little bit sooner because I could have probably got more things on my schedule for this year, you know, with festivals and things like that. But you know nowadays, with all the record- ing in different places on hard drives and dif- ferent people’s computers and it’s really strange the way things are recorded these days and it just took a little bit longer than what I thought but the result came out really nice and I’m really proud of it and so far it’s doing really good.
Yeah, big time man, it’s a wonderful record and I’ve seen reviews in other publications and everybody seems to agree, so that’s great. Final question. What are your future plans? What do you have on the boards, coming up, so to speak? You know, I just want to get back out and play more, do more festivals. It’s not really a dif- ferent plan than what I had before. I’m hop- ing that this CD helps me get going again.
When I moved back to Ohio I kinda took it a little bit easy because I went back up there to spend time with my Dad. He was older. He was in good health and everything back then but you know, I’d been in Texas for such a long time and spent a little bit of time with him and some other family and friends up there. But now, I’m getting a little more seri- ous about music again and you know, just try- ing to enjoy life, man, playing music with the guys that I like, you know?
Oh yeah. That’s what it’s all about. You know, I think you’ve got to like the guys in your band to make good music most of the time. I think a bunch of really great musi- cians can probably make a good album but if they don’t like each other I don’t think it can sustain that much, you know?
I’ve seen examples of that, even in the major bands you know, where it’s like they’re… not calling any names but I mean I’ve seen ‘em where two main guys in the band take separate buses and the only time they see each other is on stage and all that. But I like a band that’s like a brotherhood, you know? Yeah, right man, it’s all about, you create your best music if you’re around people that you like and I mean even if they’re not the ab- solute best I think that everybody’s attitude is better when everybody’s having fun, smiling, laughing, and getting along and I just think that’s equates to being “good music” you know? I’m just having fun ma. I mean, just like you said earlier, a lot of people this year have passed on and stuff and you don’t know how long you’ll be here and when you’re going to end up in blues Heaven, but I know that I just try to enjoy my time here and have fun and try to let the little stuff just slide off my back easy, you know. I’m not spending too much time worrying about things I can’t change. •
