Record-breaking temperatures triggered a dash to the swimming pool, perhaps delaying the predicted short term impact of the Brexit referendum result.
The hottest June since records began but the British summer truly kicked in around mid-July as temperatures soared to 36°C in some areas. The good news is that forecasters are predicting the warm weather will continue into August.
Swimming participation usually increases when Olympic fever takes hold. Kicking off on August 5 in Rio de Janeiro, the whole team want to wish the best of luck to Team GB – we’re keeping our fi ngers crossed for an outstanding medal haul this year.
Timely then that we publish our annual market review of the commercial pool sector as we take stock of the UK’s public pool provision. Figures from SportEngland reveal that, despite fewer swimming venues, an impressive 50,000 more people have taken up swimming at least once a month.
With water time at a premium, we shine a light on national leisure operator GLL and pay a visit to the circus-themed Carnival Pool in Wokingham, operated by 1Life.
More hot topics in this issue include the latest trends in tiling and mosaics in our ‘Finishing Touches’ feature and we explore the country’s historic pools in our look back to the ‘Glory Days’.
Finally, don’t forget, tickets are now available for the UK Pool & Spa Awards evening, which takes place on Monday October 24 at The Vox, Resorts World in Birmingham. Visit the website for more information

Look forward to seeing you there.
