enjoyable it means people remain engaged with the sport,” warns Sean McBurney, Nuffield Health National Group Exercise and Swim Manager. Swimming participation has become a key focus for Nuffield Health, which has seen a two-fold increase in the number of children learning to swim at its health clubs in the last 18 months. By bringing its third party swim school providers in-house and offering lessons to non-members, last year more than 10,000 children learnt to swim in Nuffield pools and the organisation hopes to increase this by at least a further 2,000 by the end of 2016. Sean adds: “We have seen a trend in the industry of swimming pools being closed and one of the biggest challenges that the leisure management sector faces is to keep pools open. We know how popular swimming is with our members and want to make it as accessible as possible.”

RIGHT TRACK

While the number of people swimming at least once a week has remained flat at 2.5 million, there has been a rise in those swimming at least once a month according to the latest findings from SportEngland.

Over the last six months, the number of people heading to the pool at least once a month has risen by more than 50,000 to over four million. There has also been an increase in those aged over 26 taking part in the nation’s favourite sport, including a six per cent rise in people aged 55 and over.

“The increase in monthly swimmers shows we are on the right track” said ASA Chief Executive Adam Paker, who is confident this is the start of many more people swimming regularly. He said: “When we launched our participation strategy last year to get the nation swimming, we predicted this is where we would be at this point in time.

beginning to reconnect with swimming, which is great and shows the work we are doing with pool operators, local communities and clubs to provide great experiences for swimmers is on the right track.” He added: “We now need to build on this, with a particular focus on bringing technology to the pool and ensuring swimming provides the same great personalised experience that other sports and social activities deliver.”
