Lido Campaign Gains Momentum

A new community-driven campaign to breathe new life into Peckham Lido has been given a £10,000 boost by Southwark Council. The Peckham Lido, to the north of

Peckham Rye, fell into disrepair in the 1980s and was largely demolished, but the new campaign has captured the community’s imagination with plans to build a 50m swimming pool, open air cinema, restaurant and gym. The Peckham Lido Spacehive appeal has already raised £47,000 and the Southwark Council contribution will take it £57,000 of the £64,180 needed to carry out a feasibility study. The Mayor of London has also contributed £7,500 to the project. Ben Lloyd-Ennals, co- founder of the

the Peckham Lido. This donation is a huge boost in the final weeks, but we’re not there yet! We need another £8k to hit our £66k target.”

Should the plans proceed, they will require the support of local people,

and full planning permission, taking into account any impacts on nature conservation, requirements to provide for outdoor sport and leisure. The link to the crowd funding page is www.spacehive.com/peckham-lido.

The company, which is known to consumers as Everyone Active, will manage Jubilee, Little Venice, Marshall Street, Paddington Recreation Ground, Porchester Centre, Queen Mother and Seymour Sports Centres. It will also take over the management of Moberly Sports Centre when it reopens in Spring 2018 following a £26 million investment in its redevelopment. As part of the new 10-year contract, SLM will invest £9 million in facilities and equipment including improved health and fitness facilities, upgraded changing rooms, refurbished health suites and new cycle stands. David Bibby, SLM’s Managing Director, said: “We are thrilled to be appointed as the chosen operator and to be working in partnership with Westminster City Council to further enhance leisure facilities in the area.
