Swimming Pool Scene TILING & MOSAICS
When Grayfox Swimming Pools were called out to survey an outdoor residential pool, the pool was in a sorry state. Dating back to the 1960’s, the pool had been painted numerous times and had fallen into a state of disrepair.

As one of the leading distributors of tiles and the largest supplier of mosaics throughout the UK, Waxman Ceramics are at the cutting edge of design. State-of-the-art technology allows Waxman Ceramics to recreate virtually any image and colour combination to achieve a unique finish. Working from detailed drawings or simple sketches, Waxman’s creative team can produce bespoke designs using ceramic, porcelain, glass and natural stone. The company teamed up with swimming pool and spa company, Service Solutions Ltd, to help kit-out the luxury Brynteg Spa in Snowdonia. The Spa is a part of the five-star Brynteg Holiday Home Park and offers a relaxing retreat for holiday goers to experience. A range of tiles were used to create an elegant space of relaxation and tranquillity, all the while guaranteeing durability and safety in such surroundings. Accord, a popular Waxman mosaic range that combines glass and natural stone elements, was used to create opulent hues of copper and bronze that surrounds pool edges and seating areas. This, accompanied by Niebla - a pearlescent glass mosaic in shades of blue, aided the design aspect of the project while tiles such as Unglazed were implemented to create a safe, anti-slip environment.
MAXIMUM DURABILITY
The benefits of tiles and mosaics reach far beyond aesthetics alone. They also offer maximum durability and low maintenance with an extremely long life expectancy, providing quality products
Upon commencing the refurbishment project, the Grayfox team applied a Mapilastic tanking material and tiled the pool with Waxman Niebla tiles. The team also installed two new lights, supplied by Astral UK and a top-up unit.
are specified and installed by experienced specialists using proven adhesives and grouts. And with the latest underwater technology, if there’s ever a problem, tiles can generally be replaced without having to empty the pool.
For hotel spas and home pools where space is often limited, mosaics are the go-to tile choice as they are easy to work with and look great in smaller areas. A further key benefit of mosaic tiles is that the more standard designs are priced very competitively, meaning products can be selected to meet a variety of budgets.
NATURAL STONE
“Murals are still very popular on walls and at the bottom of pools, whilst pool surrounds feature mainly porcelain replications of natural stone due to it being easier to clean and maintain than the natural versions,” explains Cameron Fraser, director at Ceramique Internationale. The Leeds-based company is currently involved with two large commercial pool projects for Dundee Leisure Centre and Huddersfield Leisure Centre.
“For larger leisure centres and pools, extruded tiles are predominantly used for the tank and edge detailing, as they have a ‘key back’ meaning they don’t come off when extra pressure is exerted on them, such as in wave pools,” says Cameron. “Extruded tiles also allow architects and designers to specify purpose made finger grips for the pool edge detail, whilst ribbed format tiles offer exceptional anti-slip properties for those dangerous areas right on the pool edge.”
