Swimming is recognised as a particularly positive physical activity which has positively impacted on potential swimming pool market.”

Tim continues: “A trend that can influence the operation of public pools negatively would be the broader austerity agenda. In some cases, Local Authorities can no longer afford to subsidise the cost of public pools which places a financial pressure on the council or operators who enter into agreements to take over the costs.” With the outsourcing of local authority leisure provision, there has been a change in the operating model. Rather than static delivery, there has been a shift to a pool programme that is reviewed and updated regularly to help to meet the demands of the community. By taking the lead on programming, operators are now able to maximise the potential of the water space available

NEXT GENERATION

Despite swimming being one of the most popular sports, ASA figures show that one in five adults are unable to swim. Doors Open At Crewe’s New Lifestyle Centre

Cheshire East Council’s £15m state-of-the-art lifestyle centre opened its doors to the public in April giving the people of Crewe the most modern combined leisure and community amenity in the county.

The concept of the Lifestyle Centre is to bring the community together with a facility which enables more efficient delivery of services, whilst also facilitating regeneration within Crewe. The centre boasts a 25m eight-lane main pool, which meets local competition standards. The learner pool is 17m x 8m and both have disability access entry and exit lifts. The Crewe Lifestyle Centre project began in August

2014 with collaboration from Keir Construction, Pozzoni Architect Ltd, Cheshire East Council and Everybody Sport and Recreation. The site replaced several outdated pre-war buildings in the town such as the Flag Lane swimming baths

and other old community-focused buildings, which became costly to run and were no longer fit for purpose.
