The new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is adopted by the European Commission and became law on May 24, 2016. What does the GDPR landscape look like now ...
The GDPR sounds like it might be the economic output for Romania, or perhaps a European political party ... which is the key reason why many companies have not yet reacted to the major threat that this EU regulation is to their business operations. They don’t know that the General Data Protection Regulation exists, what it actually involves, or its implications for their businesses.
Insurance broker Jerry Wilson was not alone around the table when he admitted it was “a subject that many of my clients have not yet woken up to”.
Corporate activity to control business data so that it is compliant with the new EU legislation is already well underway in countries such as France, Spain, Denmark and Germany – the UK is lagging far behind, said Ardi Kolah, as he explained the new GDPR regime to our assembled 'Roundtablers'.

Kolah and Martin Hickley revealed that the new GDPR had been years in the making, and was championed by Jean- Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission. The underlying reason for the GDPR was to give EU citizens back the control of their personal data and to provide a workable harmonised framework, a level playing field for a digital-world 21st century single market across the 28 member states of the EU.
“It is the most scrutinised piece of legislation possibly since the formation of the Common Market, and will have the deepest impact on both private and public sector organisations. said Kolah.
Previous data protection legislation had been created for a business world long before the advent of Google, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, said Hickley.
