OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION

Winner:

John Fisher of T A Fisher and House of Fisher

And so we came to the surprise ending to an extremely enjoyable evening – the unknown recipient of the judging panel’s accolade to the property personality who has made an outstanding contribution to the region.

The judges had chosen “a stand-out person who has promoted and created success in the execution of their property strategies and importantly been involved in promoting the Thames Valley as one of the best places in Europe to do business.”

Simon Perkins, managing director of award sponsor McKay Securities, announced the worthy recipient: John Fisher, group managing director and CEO of TA Fisher.

In a typical self-effacing response after the award presentation John Fisher said: “This is the first time I have won anything in over 30 years' of business. If I were a football manager I would have been sacked after about two years. I’m not sure how you arrived at this, but ‘Thank you’ to the judges, it is lovely to receive this award.

“We are all very lucky though to be in business in such a wonderful region. I was born in Reading in the Thames Valley, and really it was all on our doorstep, although we still had to make it happen.

“We try and do the right things, and are still going strongly, having been in business for 121 years – ‘not-out’,“ he teased David Gower.

Established in 1895, John Fisher’s business is today a privately-owned property development company, which has an enviable reputation as an experienced, quality developer with a diverse range of property interests.

“From serviced apartments to detached houses, from mixed-use and commercial schemes to property investment and regeneration projects, TA Fisher and House of Fisher are stand-out Thames Valley businesses,“ said the judges’ appraisal.

John Fisher was quick to praise others. “This is not just about me. We have a very loyal staff, some of whom have been with me for 30 years. It would not have been possible without some very dependable and capable people. We have got a fantastic team.”

Former Reading Blue Coat School student Fisher has been involved in managing the ‘family business’ for almost 32 years, having worked for local Thames Valley property firm Scotchbrooks for eight years from the mid- 1970s rising to MD of its land and new homes division.

Those early years were formative, but he still thanks his father for “creating a great platform for me to go in on” when he joined T A Fisher.

Since becoming a Fisher fourth generation leader, John Fisher has continued the company’s distinctive personal, ethical and quality-focused approach to developments and investment, while growing its range of involvements in the property sector throughout the Thames Valley.

“Throughout we have never really stood back with any self-adulation. It’s simply been a question of growing the business.

“We have stuck to what we know, which is Thames Valley property – the backbone to our firm.

“We are still doing things in the correct manner, whether its business procedures or construction work. We still work to very high standards. We are here for the long-term.”

As Fisher said recently: “Our long-established company has shown a remarkable ability to adapt to new circumstances so that it stands today as a modern, progressive property business.”

Then David Gower wished everyone a safe journey home and ‘pulled stumps’ on the TVPA for another year.
