A look inside the EU

A delegation from Future Faces has visited Brussels to take a close look at the inner workings of the European Parliament. The delegation’s visit to the Parliament was

hosted by local MEP Daniel Dalton, a former professional cricketer for Warwickshire who won his seat a year ago. Working with young people is a top priority

for Daniel, 42, both in his role as a West Midlands MEP and also as a member of the EU40 project in Brussels, which is a network of MEPs whose focus is to engage more young people in politics. Daniel also sits on the EU’s internal market and

Paul’s advice to the

leaders of tomorrow The chief executive of Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre, Paul Thandi, was the guest of honour at Future Faces’ second event in the Leadership Development series. Mr Thandi’s wide-ranging address, which drew

on his own experience, covered how to complete projects on time and how to manage a team. The address was followed by a lively question

and answer session, where Mr Thandi was asked about projects that have gone wrong. He expressed the importance of trying things even if they fail. Mr Thandi, pictured here with Future Faces

president Adam Maguire (right), made mention of his most recent project, Resorts World. The event, held at the offices of Squire Patton

Boggs, was sponsored by Millennium Point and Glide.

consumer protection committee which aims to break down trade barriers, in order to help increase competitiveness and boost jobs. Future Faces manager Kate Evans said: “Daniel covered the ways in which he felt the EU institutions could be more efficient or could be changed for the better, and also discussed low voter turnout. “The EU average is 43 per cent and the UK

turnout 36 per cent, and there was a discussion about why there is a general apathy in the UK,

and also why voting is compulsory in other member states. Daniel also covered the logistical challenge of

representing his constituency whilst attending his Brussels office four days a week. He said: “It was great to meet and talk about

EU legislation with the Future Faces group in the European Parliament. Supporting business in Birmingham and across the West Midlands is a key objective of mine and by inviting the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce to Brussels, I hope the group developed with a greater understanding of how legislation is made across the European institutions.” The Future Faces group also observed a

Committee of the Regions’ plenary session, where a minute’s silence was observed for the victims of the 22 March terrorist attacks in Brussels. Chamber chief executive Paul Faulkner, who

travelled with the group, said: “This was a great opportunity for our Future Faces members to see first-hand how the European Union operates.” The event was sponsored by the Office of Daniel Dalton MEP and Brussels Airlines.

Chamber awards announced

Future Faces is to hold its second annual dinner in September following an outstanding debut event last year. The second Future Faces Dinner

and Awards will take place on Friday 16 September in a return to Edgbaston Stadium, following last year’s successful inaugural ceremony. The dinner date was revealed to

coincide with the launch of a new look Future Faces, which has become Future Faces Chamber of Commerce, approved by the British Chambers of Commerce.

President Adam Maguire (pictured) said: “This is a very exciting time for Future Faces. The new look shows off how far we have come in such a short amount of time, and where we are heading in terms of being better integrated with the GBCC which will, in turn, allow us to continue to support and grow the

region’s developing talent even further.” HSBC are the general event sponsors for the

second year running and other sponsorship opportunities are available. Please contact Kate Evans to find out more on 0121 607 1836.
