‘Appy days ahead for cleaner air

A former Labour science minister has launched a device that users can wear to measure air pollution. The device – which looks like a

modern day smartphone – sends information to an app, which informs users how polluted the air they are breathing is. The invention is called CleanSpace Tag, and is the brainchild of Labour benefactor and amateur racing driver Lord Drayson, who is CEO of Drayson Technologies. The CleanSpace Tag records air pollution data, specifically carbon monoxide, and transmits this to the CleanSpace mobile application, and gives the user a detailed picture of their personal air pollution exposure as well as wider air pollution in the environment around them, inside or outside. The app shows users the

cleanest routes and areas available, using the most up to date readings to help them reduce their exposure to pollution. Lord Drayson said that the aim

of CleanSpace was to ‘give people the power to tackle air pollution.’ The app rewards users with

‘Clean Miles’ when they travel ‘cleanly’, i.e. by walking, running or cycling. These Clean Miles can be redeemed for rewards and discounts from CleanSpace partners including Halfords, Payasugym, Boohoo and BMWi.

Help for local charity

A Birmingham charity which provides support for children and families from a wide range of backgrounds has received a £24,000 boost thanks to law firm Freeths and accountant Hart Shaw. The Springfield Project, which is based in Moseley, has been handed the

cash after another local charity went into liquidation. Sarah Robbins, acting CEO of the charity, said: “The money will go a long

way in helping us to continue the work we do supporting local families.” Freeths was originally engaged to oversee the winding up of a defunct

charity that was based in the same area of the city as the Springfield Project. Working alongside the liquidator, Hart Shaw, the charity’s only asset was

sold and after discharging its debts, the sum of £24,073.34 remained. Mike Gilmour, partner at Freeths, said: “We were required to redistribute

the company’s remaining money to another local charity with similar aims. Knowing of the great work that the Springfield Project does, both Freeths and Hart Shaw were in agreement that it would be the perfect organisation to make use of the funds.
