offer a secure small town atmosphere with sports and recreation facilities only offered in much larger communities. We're pretty fortunate that we have as many recreation opportunities as we do. Our golf course is beautiful."

It's a drawing card for people moving into the area, as is the fact that the

housing prices are slightly lower than in neighbouring Brooks.

"We have steady growth," Snape said.

Now that the recreation centre is complete, future considerations for the Village council include the possibility of a new subdivision and seniors' housing. ■

Bilous Minister of Economic Development and Trade

Supporting jobs, supporting families – the Alberta way

It’s no secret this province was built on grit and determination, entrepreneurial spirit and relentless optimism. And when times get tough, we buckle down, band together and emerge from it stronger than ever.

And now is no different. We know that many Alberta families and businesses are facing tough times due to the global collapse of oil prices. That’s why your government is taking swift action to end our province’s reliance on a single commodity and focus on promoting jobs and diversifying the economy, while protecting services that Albertans rely on, like health care and education.

As part of your government’s economic action plan, Premier Notley appointed me Minister of the new Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. My mission is to lead Alberta’s economic plan to diversify the economy, boost innovation and competitiveness, and enhance trade, investment and access for Alberta’s products to markets around the world.

To help grow and diversify our economy, I’m working with job creators, business leaders, and people in the energy, forestry, agriculture, high-tech, tourism and small business sectors. Over the next five years, your government will invest in important infrastructure while costs are low to build schools, hospitals, roads and bridges that Albertans need now while creating thousands of jobs.

There are some seriously good reasons to #Return2Rural.

Your government has mobilized more than $2 billion in capital available through the Alberta Treasury Branch, Alberta Enterprise Corporation, AIMCo and Alberta Innovates. These are critical steps in providing access to capital, markets and expertise for Alberta companies, while supporting job creation and helping Alberta become a great place to launch and grow a business.

Your government is also teaming up with industry and other jurisdictions to move pipeline projects forward. These projects will ensure our energy product can be moved to tidewater to reach new markets, helping us create more jobs, spur economic growth and help ensure the long-term health of Alberta’s energy sector.

Your government is also setting the stage to diversify the economy so we will no longer rely so heavily on one commodity.

Southeastern Alberta’s natural gas bounty has helped draw major companies to the area – Methanex, CF Industries, Cancarb, Criterion Catalysts and Goodyear. These companies know the Medicine Hat region is a great place to invest. It has competitive lease and labour rates, skilled available labour, great market access, and an affordable cost of living.

The government’s new Petrochemicals Diversification Program will invest in developing Alberta petrochemical facilities using methane or propane as energy sources to create value-added goods like detergents, fertilizers, antifreeze, textiles and plastics for consumer goods. Instead of shipping our raw resources — and the jobs that go with them — out of province, we will process them here at home, attracting three to five billion dollars’ worth of investment in new facilities and creating jobs and diversifying the economy.

Alberta is home to one of the youngest, best educated and most diverse populations in the country. We have strong communities, accomplished universities, and thriving health care and innovation sectors. We will forge ahead with the values that built our province and continue to make Alberta the best place to call home.
