Education is getting a facelift PEGGY REVELL
Throughout Southeastern Alberta numerous projects are underway for both modernizations to old schools, and building new schools in areas where the population is growing. Here is a list of what’s underway:
MODERNIZATION OF MEDICINE HAT HIGH SCHOOL/ RELOCATION OF CAPE SCHOOL Stage: Construction Estimated completion date: April 2017
Cost: $37 million, and $4 million for the CAPE phase
The province is providing $33.6 million for the modernization, while SD 76 is contributing an additional $3.6 million. An additional $1.7 million is being fundraised.
The project has been split into two parts — modernization of the CTS wing first where the industrial shops are, and then starting renovations in the south wing where the majority of the work will occur — building the new gym, learning commons and renovating the south side. Students have been relocated to the north side of the building for this portion of the construction and then moved back to the southside once completed.
From there, the north wing will be demolished. Construction will also begin on the science wing, which will become the home of CAPE School, which is currently located in the Flats neighbourhood, in the former St. Louis School building.
MONSIGNOR MCCOY HIGH SCHOOL Stage: Construction Estimated completion date: Nov. 2016
Cost: $9.2M from province, an additional fundraising goal
64
The project includes a gymnasium expansion, common area, increased and realigned classroom
space and upgrading to mechanical, heating, electrical, ventilation and more. The Board is also aiming to raise $500,000 to go towards aspects of the modernization that aren’t covered by provincial funding — such as a chapel space, ancillary classroom/fitness area, and high need spaces for drama/technology and CTS.
RANCHLANDS SCHOOL Stage: Under design
Estimated Completion Date: Sept. 2017 Cost: Not yet determined
To be located in the north end of the city, the new Ranchlands school will have a starting capacity for 300 students, and able to expand to 600 students.
Over the past year, the division has worked on the design for the school with FWBA Architects.
At this point, SD 76 has also designated $220,000 to $250,000 in reserve funds to go towards having solar panels installed at the school — hoping to achieve a “gold" standard for an energy efficient and environmentally friendly building.
SOUTHLANDS SCHOOL Stage: Under design Estimated Completion date: Sept. 2017 Cost: Not yet determined
This new Catholic school will be located south of Holy Family Parish, between 13th Avenue and Southlands Drive, and be built for 300 students from K to 6.
With FWBA Architects, the basic design of the school has been completed, and has gone out to be costed.
A traffic impact study will also occur for the area, while an agreement has been reached with SD 76 on how to divide the allocated land, as
