arts & entertainment Music Festival The Medicine Hat Rotary Music Festival celebrating our 61st Anniversary in 2016
The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat hosts this two-week festival in March each year, which allows amateur students of classical music to compete for not only local awards and recognition, but also provides an opportunity for young musicians and singers to advance to both Provincial and National levels. Our festival includes vocal, piano, brass/woodwind, guitar, string instruments, musical theatre, speech, choral, school choral and choral speech, junior orchestra, and a band workshop. This festival has been the major community project for the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat since 1956, and continues to be successful through the support of business/service clubs and private sponsorship and both Rotary and community volunteers.

Heating up the summer nights ... JazzFest highlights musical freedom
CARRIE KELLY
The Medicine Hat JazzFest brings an extra level of excitement to the city each June, entertaining and engaging the community, but it also plays a role in enriching the economy.
JazzFest has once again been selected as a finalist for the Alberta Business Awards of Distinction in the Arts & Culture category. It was also nominated in 2015.
The honour was announced by the Alberta Chambers of Commerce and along with being a finalist for the Arts & Culture Award of Distinction, JazzFest is also eligible for the prestigious Premier’s Award of Distinction.
“It is wonderful, as an arts festival, to be recognized for our contribution to tourism and the business community through this prestigious nomination,” Lyle Rebbeck, producer and one of the founders.
JazzFest was the recipient of the first ever Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce Tourism Award of Distinction in 2010, and again received the award, now called The Southeast Alberta Shines Award, in 2015.
Now celebrating its 20th year, the Medicine Hat JazzFest has grown significantly, from a small two-day festival to an eight-day event that brings in tourists and fills hotels, cafes and pubs, infusing new money into the economy. Locals are incredibly supportive of JazzFest, but roughly one-fifth of festival attendees come from further than 100 kilometres.
"We run a shuttle every day from the Calgary airport," said Rebbeck.
The Jazz Society, which has been providing programming to the community for 26 years, created the JazzFest two decades ago.
"We started the festival because of our love of jazz and feel it's enriching and adds something to people's lives," he says.
With Rebbeck's background and credentials, it's no surprise he was involved in the creation of the festival. An instructor of woodwinds at Medicine Hat College, he has a Masters of Music degree, plays saxophone and is an active performer.
His background in music was classical, but when he joined the University of Saskatchewan Big Band, he began to learn about jazz from the inside.

Every year our society looks to the community for people that want to change the world by telling their stories. What our society offers is the means to help tell these stories.
