services area and 550-600 spectator seats for viewing events in the pool.

Construction for the project began in 2014 and is expected to be complete in June of this year.

“We are on schedule and on budget,” said MacKay.

The entire project budget stands at $37 million including money originally earmarked for outdoor field work which has since been transferred to the Leisure Centre as demand for outdoor facilities moved to the artificial turf. Costs are being shared between three levels of government with the federal and

provincial governments contributing $10 million each and the City of Medicine Hat picking up the rest of the tab.

“It’s really exciting to be part of this project,” said MacKay. “The Leisure Centre will service people in the entire region and will be a huge benefit to the community.”

Mayor Ted Clugston is also excited about the enhanced services being offered to the community.

“The City of Medicine Hat is going through a major construction boom,” he said. “The construction of the Canalta Centre and renovations at the airport and Leisure Centre are all benefits to the community.” ■
