The Complete Core Conditioner can be used in a variety of different ways, such as this exercise which works the core muscles of the upper back and neck. It helps open up the chest for better breathing and overall posture.
know how to use one well. The Complete Core Conditioner provides an anchor for the hands and feet while the person is using the ball.
The Canadian Forces Base in Suffield uses Complete Core Conditioner units in both its gym and rehab department and they can be found at the Medicine Hat YMCA. The machine, which is manufactured locally by Form-Tech Machining, consists of a collapsible frame for easy transport and storage, a Swiss ball, safety mat and adjustable carriage, headrest and handgrips.
Getting the Complete Core
Conditioner to market has taken almost four years and Deis built a support network along the way. His wife Sharie Hohn is his business partner and they searched out guidance and funding.
"When I first came up with the idea, I had to do a patent search and determine the need," Dies said.
Alberta Innovates Technology Futures was an invaluable help and gave the project a $15,000 grant (Deis needed to contribute $5,000 on top of that) to complete an opportunity assessment.
The process of starting a new business from the ground up has been challenging, but has also provided a great feeling of accomplishment. As he makes plans to grow the company and hopefully bring manufacturing costs down by producing more units at one time, Deis offers encouragement to others who have an idea they want to bring to market.
"Go to as many people as you can for advice. You have
to surround yourself with people you can trust who know more than you do," he said. "And be patient." ■
There has been much development in Medicine Hat over the last five to 10 years with a much stronger focus on diversification in our economy and plans taking shape that support that initiative. We are proud of the advancements within our newly formed Destination Marketing Organization, which has been focused on tourism development and experiential immersion in our community. The Medicine Hat Accommodation Association has continued to develop opportunities in Medicine Hat, particularly with the establishment of the Meeting and Convention Group, which focuses on attracting conferences, meetings and events to our region. Our newly formed economic development entity, Invest Medicine Hat, is focused on investment within our region and looking to build and diversify our local economy. This would include diversity in alternative energy, high tech, micro- brewing, wind, solar and geothermal power, value-added agriculture and manufacturing, as well as food processing.
In addition, the Medicine Hat College is focused on future proofing, sustainability and working with the business community towards matching education with employment, as well as applied research opportunities. We also have several arts and cultural groups that continue build up our cultural identity and brand with a view to increase cultural experiences and tourism within our region.
Add to this the fact that we have been very privileged to have several infrastructure projects move forward within the last couple of years, which have assisted with
our local investment and GDP in our local economy. These investments include a $5.3 million airport expansion, an $8 million investment into our Cultural Centre, $7 million towards a detoxification and treatment centre, $21 million towards a police station expansion, $36 million towards an expanded leisure centre, $74 million towards a new event centre and $220 million towards our regional hospital expansion. This is in addition to the highway and road improvements, including infrastructure investment into our downtown core. We are also very pleased to have investment in our school infrastructure and ongoing work for our berms to protect us during flood seasons.
Medicine Hat is well situated to welcome increased diversification in our economy and we are working hard to position ourselves within the province as an investment ready community. We need to advocate on behalf of our region to provincial and federal counterparts and continue to work with our local government to ensure we are business friendly and ready for investment and expansion opportunities. All while still ensuring we are working hard to retain the fabulous businesses that have already chosen to call Medicine Hat home.
We are well positioned for future investment and with solid collaboration and a common voice, common goals and objectives that align for the betterment of our community; we can get through the challenges of the current economy and look positively towards future opportunities and growth.
