With a sewing machine and lots of creativity, Raegan Maurer launched Little Jaimes Gray, a home-based business that sells headbands for children.
But selling Epicure took a new twist for Hartman, who also now helps to organize tradeshows with her second home-based business, Triple J Events. What started off as a number of little trade shows around the city has morphed into two big home- based business shows, one in spring and a second at the end of November in time for Christmas.
“The one at the end of November has grown to something I never ever imagined,” said Hartman, with about 75 different vendors, all selling different products at the most recent one.
And with the dip in the economy, home- based businesses are helping families stay afloat.
“The way things are, I think — and this is just an observation — there’s more and more people doing things like this from their home to help support the income that maybe has been cut, or eliminated that they had coming in to their house,” said Hartman. “I know for a fact that I had three vendors for sure at my Christmas trade show, that they have amped things
up because their spouses had been laid off.”
And while there may not be a shared office space, those running home-based businesses are finding support amongst each other.
“I had a couple of friends who had started home-based businesses. It’s been a really amazing support system,” said Maurer, saying she appreciates this aspect of it.
“Some of my closest friends have come from meeting other work at home moms,” said Haslbeck. “We’re always helping each other.”
For those wanting to start down the home-based business route, supporting each other is important — as well as community involvement, such as donating towards community fundraisers and more to help get the business out there,” Haslbeck said.
“I think that’s a big thing for establishing yourself, and just supporting local.” ■
