program itself would be about $57 million. We believe that the college would be responsible for about $10 million of that and the rest would come from a variety of sources, whether it be federal, provincial (government) or donors."
An invitation was extended to city council for the City of Medicine Hat to come on board as a funding partner for the facility since space for seniors was needed following the Veiner Centre flood. City council decided instead to refurbish and expand the Veiner Centre, however, that decision certainly didn't mean both projects can't go forward.
"This project is much bigger than one group," Petis said, adding that as a community facility, seniors would be still involved in the activities offered at the Commons on a daily basis.
MHC students are being encouraged to have a voice in the conversation when planning the Community Commons.
“The Generations concept presents
a unique opportunity for students. Pooling college resources with partners will allow for a facility that may not be feasible on our own,” said Students’ Association president, Landon Heilman.
“We look forward to working with college leaders and other partners to not only learn about the concept, but also make sure that the needs of students are fully considered.”
Darren Hirsch, chair of the MHC board of governors, also recognized the importance of students, and the potential value in a multi-generational approach.
“Students will gain a richer environment to learn. As just one example, we have an entrepreneur development centre that engages students with business mentors; who better to serve as mentors than people who have spent their lives in business solving real problems?”
