he City of Medicine Hat has taken a big step forward in enhancing leisure services in the community. A two phase project to expand outdoor and

The initial phase encompassed the outdoor portion of the project which is already up and running. The outdoor sports facility known as the Methanex Bowl was remodeled beginning with the removal of a natural grass football field.

In its place an artificial turf, multiuse field was constructed. The new model allows for football, soccer and rugby to be played throughout a longer season and more varied weather conditions.

The expansion also increased spectator seating from 500 to 1,500, improving the function and atmosphere of the facility.

In the first season, the facility has already experienced a major increase in traffic, reducing the strain on other outdoor fields.

The second phase of the project includes a major renovation to expand the Family Leisure Centre building which was opened in 1999. The facility which currently includes an aquatic centre and arena will be expanded from 90,000 square feet to 215,000 square feet.

MacKay described three major components of this phase of the project including a field house, gymnasium complex and mezzanine area. The field house being developed will include two indoor arenas suitable for sports such as soccer, lacrosse and tennis.

Similarly, the gymnasium complex will have many functions through a curtain system that will allow the facility to be divided and subdivided. Depending on the configuration, the gym can be set up as two full sized basketball courts, four volleyball courts or 10 badminton courts. A number of team change rooms, flex rooms and offices are also being developed in this section of the facility.

The final portion of the project includes a mezzanine area which will include a 200 metre track and a 17,000 square foot fitness facility complete with a wide variety of training equipment. As part of the overall expansion, the renovations will include an enhanced customer
