Terri Whitehead: Athlete, competitor, teammate By Catherine Hui
The stats only skim the surface of why Terri is most deserving of the Ultimate Canada Female Athlete of the Year award. Needless to say, Terri has an extensive Ultimate resume, racking up impressive stats at numerous national and international competitions. This woman is one of the leading defenders Canada has to offer. The list could go on forever. Here are three reasons that make her a successful Ultimate player, and why I set Terri above her competition.
1. Terri is an elite athlete. Her impressive speed coupled with her hops and her intuitive ability to anticipate her check’s next move makes her a nightmare to play against on the field. She constantly displays a high level of grit and determination.
2. Terri is a great teammate. When you watch Terri play with
Vancouver-based club women’s team, Traffic, you wouldn’t have known that she doesn’t have the luxury of practicing 3 times a week with the rest of the team. This is because Terri lives in Calgary, AB. It takes a unique individual to be a successful out of town player. Her high level of discipline, proactive approach to improve, and buy-in to the team’s plan are keys to why she is so successful.
3. Terri is humble. She is such a known entity that we can rely on to get the team blocks and goals. When you watch Terri play, everything seems so routine. The sick layout for the goal, that speedy run through D, or even that massive sky, the entire sideline erupts with cheers, and Terri proceeds with play. Off the field, we joke about washing our jerseys on her abs, but I don’t think she likes that attention either.
I’m proud to say that I get to play alongside Terri in the club scene and this upcoming summer on Team Canada Women’s that will be representing at WUGC in London, UK.
