NSOM - Montreal, QC Spirit of the Game Award

Spirit of the Game is no accident for NSOM By Luc Drouin

For the last several years, NSOM has been trying to be a leader in Spirit of the Game amongst all Ultimate teams worldwide. Although there remains plenty of room for improvement, we are proud of having been able to compete at the highest levels whilst respecting the SOTG. With the rapid evolution of the sport, this is our way to help preserve its essence.

NSOM has made SOTG an integral part of its program since its debut in 2010. SOTG is documented as part of the playbook, which provides guidance on how to achieve spirited play. NSOM has strongly encouraged players to work on their knowledge and understanding of the rules, as we believe this is the corner stone of SOTG.

The SOTG philosophy has survived the test of time with NSOM, as we were able to win the SOTG award at the last three Canadian Ultimate Championships with no shortage of player turnover each season. Since 2013, NSOM has nominated SOTG captains (Dom Roy in 2013, Daron Byerly & Dom Roy in 2014 and Luc Drouin and Mathieu Tremblay in 2015) to help NSOM focus on the behaviours necessary to play according to the SOTG.

As part of its SOTG program, at major tournaments (CUC, WUCC, PAUC), NSOM has reinstated the spirit circle (a.k.a. the circle of truth) in which NSOM shared their view of the game, and provided sincere and constructive feedback to the other team to ensure continuous spirit improvement. In 2015, NSOM lost one of our key SOTG ambassadors, Dominique Roy. He embodied the love and the spirit of the Game, on and off the field. It is a great honour, and tribute to him, for NSOM to receive the Ultimate Canada spirit award in the same year.
