Douglas Bowl IV - Battle for BC A tale of two games By KEVIN UNDERHILL
Vancouver, B.C. – The UBC
women’s Ultimate team cruised to a 15-4 win over the UVic Vikes on the rain soaked fields of UBC, capturing their third Douglas Bowl title in four years.
The Thunderbirds are ranked in the top five of the USA Ultimate rankings and were heavy favourites heading into Saturday’s showcase matchup. Despite keeping the game close for the first half, UVic couldn’t keep up with the Thunderbirds’ efficient offense led by Mira Donaldson and Victoria McCann. UVic import Kate Scarth played her first game against her old team. Playing mostly offense, Scarth’s services weren’t often required but she’s a huge pickup for the Thunderbirds going into the USAU post season.
UVic was led by U23 standouts Corinne Dunwoody and Naomi Redmond. Dunwoody’s deep throws seemed unaffected by the rain and wind and was a threat with the disc all game. It was certainly layout weather and Redmond showed her tenacity on defense with several diving blocks and possession saving grabs. The duo didn’t have nearly enough firepower though to match UBC’s depth.

In the following men’s game — featuring the 10th and 11th ranked teams on the continent at the time — the result was reversed as the Vikes men’s team, without injured national team player, Malcolm Bryson, took down the hometown Thunderbirds 15-9. Dave Neilson was huge for the Vikes early in the game establishing aerial dominance. Nick Wright, Trevor Knechtel and David Whitney- Brown were difference makers as their disc handling skills, even in the challenging weather, was solid. Ben Burelle patrolled deep as he usually does and came up with some timely blocks as well. Despite a closer second half, a UBC team led by Brayden Gee and Peter Yu couldn’t climb out of the hole they dug for themselves in the first.
The conditions were a factor as both games featured sloppy play from each side. The UVic men’s team victory marks the Vikes’ third in four years.
