THE ATLANTIC Halifax: Tournament of Fools I tried to grab fog but I mist

By CALLISTA COLDWELL

Tournament of Fools is the first outdoor tournament each year for Halifax.

Teams travel from all over the Atlantic provinces to dust off their cleats and test their grit for the upcoming Ultimate season. I say grit because it plays an important role, as this tournament happens in all weather. Rain or shine, snow or sleet this tournament can and has had it all. Tournament of Fools plays host to junior, university and adult players and is very much about the community.

The beauty of the tournament is its love of thriving in weather ambiguity. It is the mark of a truly passionate Ultimate community when, the night before

a tournament, they grab a shovel and their friends and head out to the fields to clear a foot of snow to the sidelines. Much to the excitement of everyone that year, day two of the tournament brought 5 C weather and sunburns to many players’ faces.

The tournament’s inaugural year was 2002 and was hosted by the Halifax Ultimate community. Within a couple of years it became the Dalhousie Kings Ultimate Team’s annual tournament. DKUT was founded in 2000 for the exclusive purpose of travelling to compete at Montreal’s Unleashed and Untrained Tournament. From there, the group stayed together and has grown to make themselves and Tournament of Fools a staple item

for Nova Scotia.

Whether you are new to the sport or a veteran of the fields, this tournament brings out the best of everyone in attendance. Don’t come for the weather; come for the people.
