Regional Update - Spring 2016 ALBERTA
Calgary juniors moving forward Recruitment still the key By JOHN RUSSELL
A gentle winter in Calgary has lead to an early start for junior Ultimate in Calgary. School teams are taking shape and getting ready to compete against one another this spring. The Calgary Ultimate Association has generously donated field space at McMahon Stadium (home of the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders) for schools to play against each another on Monday evenings.

The opportunity to play and train in the same facility as the Calgary Stampeders has aided recruitment efforts by teachers in Calgary.
The appeal of playing on the same field as professional athletes has helped teachers with their recruiting efforts. The spring season culminates on June 11th with the annual ShowDown tournament. Last year, eight junior high school teams from Calgary and Edmonton competed for the title and we are looking forward to increased participation in 2016.
In other junior news, Calgary Juniors Ultimate has teamed up with YMCA Calgary to offer an outdoor
Ultimate program at one of the YMCA facilities. We are hoping to leverage the advertising power of the YMCA to help introduce more junior
22
athletes to our sport and increase exposure and participation.
With CUC 2016 in Edmonton
this summer, Calgary athletes are looking forward to venturing north to compete against other cities. Many of the more experienced juniors have only played locally against older competition and are excited for a chance to test their skills against the rest of the country. Recruitment of additional players is still the key to our success, but we are trending in the right direction with a strong core of skilled and dedicated athletes.
