ONTARIO
Change is never easy. In fact, change is usually exceptionally hard.
Especially when you are dealing with something that was never broken in the first place. This year the players of Capitals, one of Canada’s most prestigious and storied Ultimate teams, have made the very difficult decision to return to their regional teams located in Ottawa, Toronto and Waterloo in order to focus on promoting the growth of women’s Ultimate in their cities.
Massive shake up in Ontario’s elite women’s scene Rebuild, rebrand and promote the sport By JORDAN MERON
P. ED KUNG After being dominated by the Capitals for years, the Ontario women’s scene will have a new feel in 2016.
This marks a massive change in Ontario’s Ultimate landscape, one that is somehow both painfully sad and
yet very exciting. In light of these changes, the Toronto Women’s Touring System has been rebranded and revolutionized. This season, in an effort to bring back an emphasis on local development, Toronto will be introducing two new women’s teams.
The first team, Toronto’s Elite Women’s Team, will focus on competing in the Triple Crown Tour in the elite division. This will allow for the premier female Ultimate players of Toronto to compete on the biggest stage that our sport has to offer. The second team, Toronto’s Competitive Team, will be competing in the Canadian Ultimate Series. This will allow for these talented players to compete in competitive tournaments against the best female athletes in our country. These changes will expose more female Ultimate players in Toronto to high-level competition than ever before. Furthermore, in order to bring a re-invigorated focus of local development back to Toronto as well as a unified touring system, both teams will be practicing together once per week, will share a similar playbook, and will follow the same fitness regimen.
These changes will be key to the future success of
Toronto Women’s Ultimate. As athletes, all Ultimate players are tasked with the job of helping to promote the growth of our sport. It is the unique privilege of being a part of a sport as new as ours. This summer in Toronto we will be doing our best to do exactly that within our own community.
