Former criminal and his lunatic wife take charge of international school

Calpe Gilbert & Sullivan Society are now in their final weeks of rehearsals for their forthcoming

concert productions of ‘Ruddigore’. Pictured (photo by Debra Miller) are Sir Despard Murgatroyd (Peter Williams) and his wife Mad Margaret (Giovanna Wallis), two of the more colourful characters

in the operetta. Sir Despard starts the operetta as the bad baronet of Ruddigore who is forced, under a curse, to commit a crime a day or die. Mad Margaret was his bride to be, until his unfortunate legacy of crime was discovered. Losing him is what causes her madness. Fortunately, as in most Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, there is a happy ending, with the couple being reunited and taking on responsible positions in society, including running an international school. Margaret’s madness is also kept firmly in check by her husband by ingenious means. Full of the usual good G&S melodies and convoluted storyline, Ruddigore is one of the lesser known operettas which is well worth discovering. Calpe Gilbert & Sullivan Society are performing it in concert form with costumes with linking dialogue. Tickets are still available for both performances of ‘Ruddigore’ in concert on Wednesday 13th April at the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz del Pi and on Thursday 21st April at the Salon Blau, Calpe. Both performances will start at 7.30pm and tickets priced at 10€ can be ordered by phone from 96 648 0300 or 696 514 613. They are also available from Margaret & Elena’s card and bookshop in the Gabriel Miro, Calpe.
