Page 39 Rabies - the new legislation
The Valencian Community has a new law (Orden 3/2016) regarding rabies, which came into effect on the 4th of March 2016.
Rabies is a viral infection, which can be transmitted to all mammals including humans; this is why rabies is considered to be an important subject and an extremely serious health threat, especially environmentally.
So which animals does this law affect? Dogs, cats and ferrets.
How does this affect my cat, dog or ferret? The new law states that dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated every year against Rabies.
What ages must this be done from? Once the animal has reached an adult age the vaccination must be annually, but while they’re young it must be done after twelve weeks of age and not over sixteen weeks of age.
My cat / dog / ferret was previously vaccinated, do I have to start a new course? No, all they require is a single dose of the rabies vaccination, to be repeated annually from then on.
Is there anything else I need to do for my pet? Yes, it is also now compulsory to have a worming treatment administered by a veterinarian at least once a year, and for it to be signed off on the animal’s paperwork.
What has driven this new law to be introduced? The number of animals arriving in Spain from France and Africa in particular.
So what do I need legally for my pet?
DOG: Microchip, rabies vaccination and pet passport (official vaccination book), and at least one worming treatment per year for echinococous, administered by a veterinarian.
CAT: Rabies vaccination, vaccination book, and at least one worming treatment for echinococous, administered by a veterinarian.
FERRETS: Rabies vaccination, vaccination book, and at least one worming treatment for echinococous, administered by a veterinarian.
* Although these are the legal requirements we do recommend your pets have full vaccinations and are wormed regularly to follow a correct prevention plan. * If your vaccination book for your animal wasn’t issued in the Valencian community, and the pet will remain in the Valencian community, a new booklet should be issued.
If you have any questions, or need your pet to be vaccinated please contact Francesca or Maria Carmen at Clinica Veterinaria El Puerto in Javea.
