Spring is in the air. We have our hour back and the days are longer along with warmer weather, and suddenly the Mediterranean cafe lifestyle has returned. There are lots of different local entertainments going on but some of the major ones we highlight here.
One location that has many activities throughout the year that is often missed by International residents and visitors is the IFA Exhibition centre, beside the El Altet Airport. One of the most popular events at the IFA is for those interested in cars and bikes. From 22nd to 24th April,10.30am to 9pm, the 7th edition of SOBRE2RUEDAS, Motorcycle Fair, will be presented alongside 38th FIRAUTO, Car Show and the 24th edition of the second hand Motor Show EXPOCAR. The last edition of FIRAUTO + EXPOCAR & SOBRE2RUEDAS attracted more than 20,000 visitors. You can find: motorcycles, new and used vehicles, Km 0, products and services for the driver, financing services, insurance, etc. The cost of admission is 8€, or 6€ by presenting the discount voucher that can be downloaded from the download section of the IFA website. During the three days, IFA will become the largest showcase of motorcycles, new and used vehicles in the province, as visitors can see and compare a wide range of vehicles and admire the engine market developments. Throughout the month of April, Zenia Boulevard shopping centre have different entertainment and entertainers in the Plaza Mayor from around 7pm to 9pm each evening. One of the highlights this month is the Feria De Abril which includes Ballet Flamenco Raquel Peña while many other artists, workshops and tournaments, including Playstation evenings are planned. After another ‘Sold Out’ performance before Easter, the OST, Torrevieja’s Symphony Orchestra return to the International Auditorium in Torrevieja for a performance dedicated to Beethoven and Mendelssohn on April 23rd at 7pm. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano Op.56, more Commonly Known as the Triple Concerto, was composed in 1804 and makes up the first act of the concert. The second part of the performance is Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90, commonly known as the Italian. This orchestral symphony written by German composer Felix Mendelssohn finds its inspiration in the colour and atmosphere of Italy, where Mendelssohn made sketches but left the work incomplete. 6th-8th May sees Campoverde Theatre Group’s forthcoming Production of “Somme - Memories of a Century.” It is now 100 years since the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and so, in memory, the Campoverde Theatre Group’s production will feature song, dance and sketches, and will be in a Supper format. It will be performed at Phoenix Nights, just outside of San Miguel, on the road to Campoamor. Tickets are priced at 10€ to include a Supper before the show and are available during rehearsals, at the Las Filipinas Community Centre between 2pm and 4pm on both a Monday and a Wednesday. Torrevieja has a new film and cultural club. Thanks to a collaboration with Cines IMF in Torrevieja, located beside Habaneras Shopping Centre in the Ozone Centre, every week a brand new film shows, once a night, for all seven nights, in English language with Spanish subtitles (called: V.O.S.E.). No need for headphones. It costs 5€ on Monday and Wednesday and 7€ every other night and Fiestas. However film club members can visit on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for 5€ and after you’ve seen ten films, the 11th is free, plus many other benefits from joining the club. The Rojales Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales is open on the 1st Sunday of each month in the morning from 11am to 2pm. It’s is a fun place to visit if you are looking for a small gift, piece of art or decoration. Local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. Also on the 1st Sunday of each month is the Ace Cafe Classic Car event, on the street outside La Torre Hotel in Los Montesinos from 11am to 1pm while Moonshiners have their Classic and Custom Rod event at the Miroil Garage in Catral on the last Sunday of the month between 11am and 1pm. Admission is free.
Kids of all ages are invited to attend the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the friends of the railways association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm with Miniature Train Rides from November to April on the 2nd Sunday of every month from 10:30am to 1:30pm and May to October the 2nd Saturday of every month between 4:30pm and 7:30pm. Their Train Museum is open every Saturday from 4pm to 8pm. Donations of 1.50€ are the norm to enjoy the experience.
Bodegas Faelo is a small familiar winery with more than 100 years of vinegrowing tradition. It is run by the fourth generation of traditional winegrowers in Matola, an area in the countryside of Elche, in the south of DO of Alicante in Spain (an area with a long winemaking tradition). They are the ‘Vinos del Camp d’Elx’ (Wines from the field of Elche). They are governed by respect to the natural environment, their traditions, as well as biodynamic and selected viticulture, obtaining a product in harmony with the environment. They offer a guided tour of the house, winepress and museum, vineyard, fermentation room and barrel room. Moreover, you will taste three wines (white, red and rosé) accompanied by dried sausages from the area, artisan cheeses, homemade bread with extra virgin olive oil and dried fig and date bread. The price is 10€ per person. The duration of the visit is about 1½ hours.
