Page 5 Medieval Craft Market in Villajoyosa

Last year the medieval market of Villajoyosa was a tremendous success. For the regional craft association Amata the results were very positive: lots of public, good quality stalls and a lovely atmosphere. So, this year Amata will once again be in La Vila on 29th, 30th April and 1st May.

This means that the visitors get another chance to buy directly from the person who made the object and can even have something specially made to order if they don't find quite what they are looking for. All participants bring their tools along and can give a personal touch or can adapt the chosen item

a special design or

engraving a name on the chosen piece. Quite a few people will be working on their stall so that the visitor can see how much skill, patience and love goes into the making of one single object.

Every stall offers "piezas únicas" (one off designs) for prices well below those charged in the galleries. Joan makes lovely wooden toys and puzzles, Mikel makes colourful shoes and sandals for kids and adults and José Luis creates lamps that look like giant insects. The potter Miguel will offer you a chance to turn your own little bowl or cup, the bags made by Tony will

last you a life time, Juanjo recycles all sorts of materials and makes original jewellery from spoons or forks and Daniela paints beautifully on Spanish roof tiles. Beate brings her copy of an Iberian loom to show the oldest weaving techniques. Several stalls offer design jewelry in all sorts of material: macramé, silver, ceramics, silk and even dried flowers.

The younger visitors can play table games or have a go on the merry-go- round, while their elders can fortify themselves in the tavern, the "pulpería" (your chance to try tasty nuggets of octopus) or take a tea or typical Arab food in the Jaima. The slightly crazy musicians

of Sol Redó enliven the

market as does Alan, sometimes as a juggler, at others times walking around on stilts in a variety of characters and closing the market each night with a fire show.

The market opens on Friday the 29th of April at 4pm. On Saturday and Sunday the market stays open from 11am 'til about 10pm.
