HELP Diabetes Support April Meetings
The HELP Diabetes Support Service is led by a recently retired Diabetes Nurse Specialist,
and meets 5 x per year. Dorothy, as a volunteer, is also helping individuals on a one to one basis to understand their diabetes.
Dorothy has 35 years of diabetes nurse experience and ideally needs a dietician to complement the service. Last year in the absence of a Dietician, a Nutritionist, Ann Mather, was invited to speak on diabetes and diet. The following was a comment from one of the group and we are pleased to have Ann present again in La Jara this month and in Teulada in June. “The talk from the nutritionist has revolutionised my diabetic life and reducing carbs to a minimum has lowered my blood sugar, overall, by a good 25%, and my insulin by around 30%. This is a pretty impressive result. I have dropped 5 kilos in weight”. The health benefits of weight loss for many people with diabetes, and for a healthy diet for the rest of us, are well established. Dorothy is still hoping to find a Dietician to give a presentation on diabetes and a healthy diet. Meanwhile a Dietician from Cambridge 800 will be sharing the results of a study into low calorie diets and diabetes later in the year. So whether you have diabetes, know someone with diabetes or want to know more, all are welcome to our meetings. Those simply interested in diet and health may also wish to join us in La Jara in April. The dates of the meetings are as follows: Teulada: Tues 12th April. Held in the MABS room of the IMED building, Cami Calvari, Teulada. Dorothy will be speaking on Diet and Diabetes. La Jara: Fri 15th April. Held in the HELP Activity Centre, Avenida Oeste 29 bajo, 03709 La Xara (next door to the Tabac). Guest Speaker - Ms Ann Mather, Nutritionist, will give a presentation entitled: “The Nutritional Approach: Diabetes, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol”. Both meetings are 4.30 – 6.30pm. Every meeting gives time for questions on anything related to Diabetes as well as the advertised topic. Contact: Dorothy Cook, Lead Professional Volunteer on 634 349 240 or email

HELP with referendum voting
HELP of Denia and Marina Alta recently received a visit from Simon Manley, the British Ambassador, Sarah-Jane Morris, the British Consul for Madrid and Alicante, and Sara Munsterhjelm Vice Consul in Alicante.
The Ambassador wanted to know about the work that HELP do and to find out what sort of questions were being asked of HELP about the future for expats should the UK decide to come out of the EU.
Candida Wright, President of HELP and Catherine Perez Pinto, Vice President, were on hand to inform him of some of the worries which expats have relating to the Referendum and the possible EU exit by Britain. Primarily for most, being pensioners, this concerned health cover. The Ambassador urged that people with the right to vote in the referendum registered as soon as possible. He explained that UK nationals who have been registered to vote in the last 15 years can register as overseas electors, to be able to vote in UK Parliamentary General Elections, UK-wide, and European parliamentary elections.
To register people need to go to the web page
www.gov. uk/register-to-vote. You can vote by post so the sooner the better to avoid postal delays.
Candy suggested the HELP representatives could offer assistance on some set days at the La Xara Activity Centre to help people who don’t have a computer or who are not sure how to register online. The Ambassador provided a Government information leaflet and this can be seen on the HELP Facebook page, Help DAMA and copies are available at the HELP office in La Xara.
