2016 NATM Young Professional Award Tracks 2016 NATM Young Professional Award By Pam Trusdale, NATM Executive Director

The 2016 Outstanding Young Professional was awarded to Brandon Ikola of Fabform Industries, Roseburg, OR. Ikola has been involved with Fabform since his father founded the company in 1992. He was officially hired in 2001 when he turned 16, working in every position in the manufacturing plant. After graduating from Eastern Oregon University he moved into the office to job shadow business operations.

Brandon personally, and Fabform as a company, have both experienced growth, including investing in and moving to a new fabrication facility in 2013, since he assumed the leadership role of General Manager and Vice President from his father Rob.

Brandon has taken full advantage of his participation in NATM and leveraged it to foster the

collaborative exchange

of learning and ideas from members not only in the Northwest, but across the country. Over the past four years, Brandon has talked with and toured other fabrication and distribution facilities to foster relationships, to discuss the challenges he was facing and to capture best known methods.

As a result, Fabform Industries, Inc. has adjusted its management structure and integrated team leaders into the production

environment, implementing and sustaining a culture focused on building and delivering "safe quality built trailers at a competitive price." Fabform has developed clear position expectations to clarify roles and enhance accountability, altered the workflow in the facility, integrated transfer cradles to enhance production, improved documentation to streamline fabrication, learned and integrated basic Lean Manufacturing principles and is embarking on enhancing their

inventory management.

When faced with the challenge of finding and hiring skilled fabricators and painters in his small community, Brandon initiated an intern program and is partnering to re- establish the skills of welding and painting at their local schools, Roseburg High School and Umpqua Community College.

Brandon leverages an approach of abundance and prides himself on

collaborating with others and utilizing industry groups such as NATM to learn with the sole intent of driving improvements to enhance productivity and to create a place in his community where people want to come and stay. Brandon continues to strive for excellence and is most interested in establishing Fabform as a great place to work in his community.
