Strategic Budgeting Tracks

responsibilities. At the same time it is important to be diligent in monitoring new regulations and legislation to ensure that trailer manufacturers can comply with regulations often intended for the automotive and light-truck industry. As NHTSA begins to focus on enforcement in the trailer industry, NATM will need to increase its efforts to both represent and to educate members. This is yet another item that will no doubt impact the Association’s budget.

Goal #4 – Consumer Awareness. The Board of Directors and Marketing Committee have identified a number of trade shows where staff can meet one-on-one with consumers and end- users to promote trailer safety. The specific trade shows were selected based on variety of target groups: trailer dealers, fleet managers, government agencies and consumers. The focus will be to enhance awareness of the NATM Compliance Program and the meaning of the NATM Compliance Decal and to promote consumer safety. In marketing this, NATM will also be working on developing partnerships with key agencies and organizations that are better poised to reach consumers. NATM members can also play an active role in this goal by providing the recently released “Safely Towing a Trailer” brochure with

each trailer sold. For more information about ordering these brochures, contact NATM at NATMHQ@natm.com. Marketing and advertising is an expensive undertaking, but will contribute to both consumer safety and consumer understanding of the importance of purchasing trailers from an NATM Compliance Verified manufacturer.

Each of these goals and initiatives has a cost attached. In the upcoming year, the staff and various committees will be focusing on those costs and how it will impact the budget. The goal is to increase prices minimally with the net revenue earmarked for relevant projects. NATM provides all programs and services at the lowest possible cost to members (i.e. free compliance consultations). As implementation of the Strategic Plan moves forward, NATM will continue to focus on providing the best services at the lowest cost. Those costs may be increasing, but those increases will be to provide enhanced services, improved programs and the best possible representation of the light- and medium-duty trailer manufacturing industry. More information on the specific costs of implementation and any raises in fees for members will be provided in upcoming issues of Tracks.
