Safe trailers feature this important decal and other details that make our roads safer


COMPLIANT TRAILERS HAVE REFLECTIVE TAPE


• On rear of trailer as close to top and as far left and right as possible


• Continuous on the rear bumper or underride guard (if any)


• On rear of trailer: Horizontal 2” red/


white tape full width approximately 15” to 60” off ground


• On sides: Horizontal 2” red/white tape evenly spaced over at least 50% of the length starting as close to the front and rear as possible and between 15” to 60” off ground


• Edge of tape is at least 3” away from the nearest edge of a lamp (exception: red portion of tape may be within 3” of red lamps)


COMPLIANT TRAILERS DOCUMENT THE DETAILS


• Manufacturer is included on NHTSA database. Products match NHTSA database. VIN Identifier on NHTSA database


• Records identify each unit manufactured and include: model identification, VIN, dealer or customer name and address of sold units, and date sold units shipped





Supplier data verifying compliance is available for: safety chain/cable capacity – attachment, lighting photometric, axle capacity, coupler capacity


• A system for assigning Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (GVWR) is available and covers all current production models, taking into consideration axle, tire and rim capacities


It is ILLEGAL to put used tires on a new trailer.

COMPLIANT TRAILERS HAVE RIGOROUS BRAKE & TIRE STANDARDS


• All hydraulic brake systems employ DOT approved hoses


• Emergency (breakaway) braking system is installed for electric brakes and battery is capable of engaging brakes for 15 minutes minimum


• Trailers built for commercial use meet federal brake laws •





Anti-lock brakes are installed where required (equipped with air or air- over-hydraulic brakes)


Maintains and retains tire identification record of new tires provided to first purchaser (other than for resale) of each new unit
