Help! If the answer is no, and creating this space sounds more like a daunting challenge than the fun and rewarding journey that it should be, never fear.... help is at hand! Over the coming months I’ll help you discover how to unleash the potential in your home, guiding you through discovering your own unique style, planning your space, how to use colour, pattern and texture, and how to interpret the looks you love so they enhance your rooms and enrich your life.
Defining your style The first step on this journey is understanding your personal style and being able to define this in one statement will help you make the decisions that bring your home closer to your dream space. Try thinking about your style in a wider sense; the clothes you wear, the books you read, the
sort of music you love, the restaurants you frequent and why. What sort of homes are you drawn to when you look through magazines, what do you like or dislike about family and friends homes. Try and come up with a word or phrase that pulls all of this together. It may be rustic or old world, modern or elegant, simple or eclectic but without overthinking it this will be the starting point for defining your style.
Balancing your look Once you have your first phrase, making it truly personal is all about counterbalance. Most of us are not entirely one way when it comes to style so try adding a second word or phrase that speaks to you such as fresh, current, vibrant etc. Take myself for example, my basic style that I love for my home is comfortable rustic and as we live in a converted finca this style is perfect, however I do love a bit of art deco elegance so mixed in with my rustic furniture are touches of deco in artwork, accessories and lamps.
