It’s February and that means carnival time for many of us. Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, pancake day, call it what you will, along with the Chinese New Year, Ash Wednesday, St. Valentine’s Day, and to top it all off, we even have an extra day this time round, as it’s a Leap Year.
Torrevieja has any number of great Fiestas throughout the year, and although details have not been coming to us thick and fast, that most colourful and fun of fiestas Carnival will start during the first week of the month. One of the major attractions was always the National Drag Queen contest that was held on January 23rd, with the winners always parading at the end of the carnival and adding their own style of glamour to the event.
Torrevieja will be celebrating the annual Carnival from the 16th January to the 13th February 2016. The two main parades will take place on the Sunday 7th and Saturday 13th February. On Sunday 7th February at 4pm, the Carnival the first of two parades gets underway. The Carnival Contest Parade starts from Plaza María Asunción, just outside of Mullins Irish Pub, and continues along Calle Ramón Gallud, past the Virgin del Carmen Cultural Centre, with the main focus being just in front of the Town Hall Square and finishing at Calle Patricio Pérez. The more flamboyant night carnival takes place the following Saturday 13th February starting at 10pm and follows the same route. The parade lasts about 90 minutes and thousands of people line the streets. Hundreds of kilos of sweets are thrown to the watching crowd and more than 1,000 people from many different schools, clubs and associations take part. The night time parade has more of a Brazilian flavour to it, in that it can be a little more suggestive, but it’s all down in good humour. Don’t forget your camera and bag to catch all those sweets in.
But before you get yourself all excited about Carnival, the last Panto of the season takes place the weekend before. It’s the turn of the Campoverde Theatre Group who are presenting a New Year Pantomime after an absence of two years. Their February production is The Owl and the Pussy Cat, which will be performed at the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel Friday 5th, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th
